How does an arm lift work?

An arm lift is a major operation. Before you decide on this surgical procedure, consider what your expectations are and discuss them with our plastic surgeon.

The operation takes place under general anesthesia and takes approximately two hours. Skin and possibly fatty tissue on the underside of the upper arm is removed through a cut between the armpit and elbow. The location and length of the incision depends on the amount of skin that will have to be removed. When the surgeon has removed the excess skin and the associated fat, the skin is closed. After suturing you get a bandage or a special sleeve around both arms. Wear the bandage / sleeve at least a week day and night after the procedure. After this week we expect you to return to the practice for the first check-up. The dressing and stitches will be removed during the check-up.

When am I suitable for an arm lift?

You are eligible for an arm lift if you have lost a lot of weight, for example after a stomach reduction or gastric band. In some cases, an additional procedure such as liposuction is suggested. The doctor will explain this during a consultation.

What are the benefits of an armlift?

Consultation

Before your conversation with your plastic surgeon, you will have a conversation with your consultant. The purpose of this interview is to inform you about the general course of events that must be arranged around your procedure.

During the first consultation we discuss all topics that are related to the treatment. This is how we enter into a conversation about what bothers you most about your arms and what you would like to change about this. The methods and surgical techniques will also be discussed and investigate which suits you best, what results you can expect, what the possible risks of this intervention are and what the aftercare will look like. You will always receive honest advice and you will be clearly informed about the treatment and the period that follows.

During the consultation with the plastic surgeon, he will check whether you are a suitable candidate for an arm lift. The surgeon will ask about your health, medical background and possible medication use. If you use blood-thinning medication, you must stop this at least a week before the treatment.

After this first consultation you can make the right choice. We understand that a lot of information comes to you during the first consultation. So don’t hesitate if you want to contact us again after this conversation.

What can I expect after an arm lift?

After the operation, the treated zone feels painful and you experience a pulling and pressing feeling. It is normal to experience painful bruises, swollen skin and a fair feeling. Often this disappears automatically after about two to six weeks. If you are concerned, always contact us.

Although the armlift gives a good result fairly soon after the operation, the final result will only be visible after 3 months. This is because the swelling is then withdrawn. You will have a fairly long scar. If these scars are red and swollen, it will disappear automatically after a few weeks.

After the operation we recommend the following:

  • An adult should stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery

  • Do not drive a vehicle in the first 48 hours after the operation due to the effect of the anesthesia

  • During the first week after the operation, do not drink alcohol because of the effect of the anesthesia

  • Take it easy

  • You are allowed to work out after 6 weeks

  • Do not swim or go to the sauna for the first six weeks

  • Both smoking and alcohol have an adverse effect on the healing and the recovery, so try to avoid this.
