Botox is used to treat various signs of ageing and health problems, such as migraines. It is also especially used to treat wrinkles caused by excessive muscle activity. Botox can also be used to treat excessive sweating.
Botox (or Botulinetoxine) shuts down the ‘communication’ between a muscle and a nerve. As a result, wrinkles become softer and less visible.
Our doctors who do injectables can provide you with extensive information on Botox treatments. You can make an appointment online for a consultation.
When am I a suitable candidate for a Botox treatment?
You cannot have a botox treatment at Praktijk Gabriels if you are younger than 18. The older you become, the more wrinkles you will get. Wrinkles are caused by muscle activity such as laughing, frowning and talking. These movements cause wrinkles in particular on the forehead, next to the eyes and the corners of the mouth.
What can I expect after having had a botox treatment?
It is important to keep your head up straight as much as possible after the treatment. You may not lie down, nor do sports or rub your face until 3 hours after the botox treatment has been given.
However, it is very important to use the treated muscle(s) after the treatment as much as possible. Our doctors who do injectables advise flexing the treated muscle(s) as much as possible by frowning, for example. You should do this when the muscles in the forehead have been injected.
We also kindly ask you to refrain from using any make-up. It is also not advisable to have a facial massage in the first few days.
It takes time for the injected botox to take effect. After two weeks, the final results will be visible. The wrinkles will have become shallower.
Botox injections give temporary results. In most cases, the results are visible for six months to nine months. It is possible, though not guaranteed, that the effects will last longer after multiple botox treatments.
Risks and complications with botox
Although Botox injections are a recognised and accepted method of treatment nowadays, it is not a procedure that should be thought of lightly. Complications from Botox treatments are uncommon, though not impossible. The most common complication is bruising or an infection (at the place where the needle entered the skin). It is also possible to have an allergic reaction.
Excessive use of botox can give unwanted and unnatural results. Your face may become expressionless. Should this be the case, then it is not reversible. Though, this effect will become less over time after a few months when the effect of the botox has worn off.
A wrinkle is caused by strong muscular activity in the eyebrows. Some people frown from a young age; others will never frown. When you have an active frown, it will often appear. It is often visible when you concentrate, look angry, stare or look into the sun.
A wrinkle treatment using Botuline Toxine relaxes the muscle, causing existing wrinkles to be less prominent and prevents any new wrinkles forming. The treatment takes maximum 15 minutes.

Crow’s feet are also often called laughter lines and are sometimes considered as charming and as a natural ageing process. Even so, crow’s feet sometimes caused by deep or multiple laughter lines next to or under the eye can disturb the peace in the face. The crow’s feet can also make you look older than you really are. A wrinkle treatment can reduce crow’s feet.

Horizontal wrinkles on the forehead above the eyebrows are primarily caused by strong muscle activity between the eyebrows and the hairline. A wrinkle treatment relaxes the muscle, causing existing wrinkles to be less prominent and prevents any new wrinkles from forming.
Depending on the position of the eyebrows and the excess skin from the upper eyelids, this will determine whether or not to treat the forehead. In some cases, an upper eyelid correction may be advised first. The best order for your treatment will be explained to you during the consultation.

If your eyebrows have sagged, this can cause your face to look sombre. If it’s only the outer part of your eyebrows that have sagged, then an eyebrow lift could be the answer. For the eyebrow lift, a very small amount of Botulinum Toxin (a muscle relaxant) is injected just under the eyebrow. An eyebrow lift is virtually painless and safe. The treatment takes maximum 15 minutes.

When the upper gums become exposed, we talk about a gummy smile. This can happen because the upper lip is pulled up too high. A treatment using injectables can be the answer. A gummy smile is not always the result of too-small teeth. Sometimes the teeth look small because there is an imbalance between the gums and the upper lip.
It is a quick treatment and virtually painless. You will receive two injections in the muscle that pulls up in the upper lip. There is no need for an anaesthetic. After the treatment, the upper lip will come precisely to your front teeth covering up the gums. The treatment takes 15 minutes.

Excessive sweating can be a daily problem for many people. Not only does clothing wear out quicker, but it is especially annoying, aesthetically and socially. In extreme cases, people can shut themselves off. Treatment with Botulinum Toxin can be the answer. The muscle relaxant is known as the anti-wrinkle agent, but it is also very effective against excessive sweating. The muscle relaxant stops the nerves from stimulating the sweat glands. This stops the glands from producing sweat. Don’t worry; all other nerve functions will stay intact. The treatment takes 30 minutes.
