What is a gastric band?
A gastric band is also called a lap band or gastric banding. It is the most common surgical procedure in the Netherlands to prevent obesity.
The gastric band ensures that less food can be taken and is therefore called a restrictive procedure. In addition, you experience a saturated feeling faster with the gastric band that also lasts longer. In this way, the gastric band helps to lose weight. Ultimately, you are the one who has to make sure to lose weight through a change in lifestyle. That means less eating and more exercise. The result of a gastric band is only really lasting when you really want to go for it.
Praktijk Gabriels acts as a mediator. Registration and follow-up appointments are offered in Barendrecht (NL). Our patients are treated under the responsibility of and in a bariatric center in Belgium.
How does placing a gastric band work?
When you undergo gastric band surgery you will be given a general anesthetic. This means that the whole body is numb, so that you will not notice anything of the procedure. Even after the operation you will not remember anything of the operation. You go to sleep and wake up when the gastric band is placed. Because you will be given a general anesthetic, the procedure will consist of a day intake.
The gastric band is placed around the upper part of the stomach by means of a (viewing) operation. The stomach is narrowed and divided into a small and larger part. The gastric band creates an early satiety feeling. So, you are less hungry. The gastric band is made of silicone with an inflatable balloon on the inside. In this way, the diameter of the gastric band can be adjusted after the operation: the narrower the band, the faster you feel full and the slower the food passes the gastric band. Topping up (that is: making it more tight) is done by injecting fluid (saline) through the injection port that is placed under the skin during the operation and is connected to the gastric band via a tube. Moisture can also be removed so that the gastric band can be adjusted to your body and wishes.
When am I suitable for a gastric band?
At Praktijk Gabriels, you are eligible to get a gastric band from a BMI of 29.
You must also be between the ages of 18 and 60 and be motivated to adjust your eating and living pattern. You also qualify if you have health problems, such as diabetes, heart and joint problems, that are related to obesity.
Bariatrics is a collective term for all surgeries for countering excess weight. Think of a gastric balloon, a gastric band, a gastric sleeve and a gastric bypass.
We understand very well that it is a big step to make a first appointment for a bariatric procedure. That is why you can expect us to fully support you in this, if you want to. We advise you to bring your partner or good knowledge to the first consultation.
During the first consultation, we discuss all topics related to the treatments. This is how we approach the conversation about what is most disturbing to your body and what you would like to change about it. The methods and operation techniques will also be discussed and researched which suits you best, what results you can expect, what the possible risks of this surgery are and how the aftercare will look like. You will always receive honest advice and will be informed in a clear way about the treatment and the period that follows.
During the first consultation, the consultant also checks whether you are a suitable candidate for the bariatric procedure of your choice. The surgeon will ask about your health, medical background and any medication. If you use blood-thinning medication, you must stop at least one week before treatment.
After this initial consultation, you can make the right choice. We understand that during the first consultation a lot of information comes at you. Do not hesitate to contact us after this conversation.
What are the benefits of a gastric band?
No diet: never eat too much again
With this operation you can lose a lot of excess weight
The size of the ‘upper’ stomach can be adjusted by the balloon
The surgeon does not have to cut into the stomach
Basically, a gastric band is forever. However, it can be removed again without affecting the stomach.
What can I expect after placing a gastric band?
After the operation, you will stay in the recovery room for at least 2 hours. If your body functions are good and the doctor has fired you, then you are allowed to go home. Know that you cannot take part in the traffic for the first week after the operation, unless otherwise stated by the doctor.
Do not use dangerous machines during the first week. Do not use tobacco, drugs or alcohol.
Smoking narrows blood vessels and can interfere with wound healing or general recovery. It is therefore advisable to stop smoking four weeks before to four weeks after the procedure.
The body has undergone treatment and has to restore at its own pace. This differs per person but always needs time. We have summarized the most important rules of life after the procedure in our leaflet.
The day after the operation you will be called by the support team of Praktijk Gabriels. An appointment is made for the first check, after 2 weeks and after 6 weeks. Should it be necessary, the tire is tightened, depending on the result and feeling of satisfaction.
After three months, six months, nine months and a year, you have re-checked the bariatric nurse in the practice of Diana Gabriels. It will always be examined which adaptation is needed. From the first year after the operation, an inspection will take place twice a year for five years.
Everybody is unique. This means that everyone will lose weight in his or her way and pace. We therefore cannot offer any guarantee on how much weight you will lose within six months. Of course, you will eat much less than before but this also concerns the type of food that you get inside. In addition, we recommend to exercise enough during this process. This is not only important for your health but it also helps you to achieve your goal faster.
