How does Gastric balloon work?
This treatment is a non-surgical procedure, which means that you will not be operated ore undergo full anestethic. However, your throat will first be numbed, after that a light sleeping aid will be given to place the gastric balloon. Before placing the balloon there will be checked with a camer if the esophagus, diaphragm and stomach are in order. The small camera is attached to a tube, which makes it possible to insert en extract the camera. When all is well, the placement of the gastric balloon can begin. The empty, rolled-up gastric balloon will be placed in the stomach through a “filling tube” through your mouth. When the balloon is placed in the stomach, this tube will fill the balloon with 500 ml of physiological saline. When this is done, the balloon will be closed and the procedure will be completed.
Now you know how the treatment works, we would like to tell you how we can ensure you lose weight? Because the balloon is filled with water, it floats in your stomach. This ensures that about 2 / 3rd of the stomach content consists of the gastric balloon. So you can only fill 1 / 3rd with food. This makes you feel full quicker and you have less appetite. The gastric balloon stays in the stomach for up to a year. Then it is removed. The balloon ensures that you get used to eating less. Placing the gastric balloon takes about 20 minutes.
Before treatment you will have a consult with Chris our baratric consultent. Chris will assist you throughout the process of your treatment.
Pro’s and Con’s
There are many benefits to be gained after placing a gastric balloon, but of course there are, as with any procedure, a couple of downsides to. For example, you can continue to eat everything with a gastric balloon, but no fat can be added to your meals. This is because fat sticks to the balloon. In addition, you may be nauseous the first few days after the placement. There are a number of complaints that may occur after the gastric balloon has been placed. Nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps can start in the first hours after placement. This is a normal phenomenon for the first few days. It is also possible that you will suffer from shoulder discomfort, this is because the gastric balloon presses against the diaphragm. Some people suffer from bad breath. You can prevent this by drinking a lot of water and brushing your teeth regularly. Please note that the body has to get used to the gastric balloon. This means that you have to take it easy the frist 10 days after the procedure.
