How does a gastric band work?

Before treatment you will have a consult with Chris our baratric consultent. Chris will assist you throughout the process of your treatment.
When you undergo gastric band surgery you are put under a general anesthetic. This means that the whole body is numb, so that you will not be awake during the procedure. Even after the operation you will not remember anything. You go to sleep and when u wake up  the gastric band has been placed. Because you will be brought under a general anesthetic, you will be admitted for a day.

The gastric band is placed in the upper part of the stomach. The stomach is narrowed and divided into a small and larger part. The gastric band gives makes you feel full quicker. So you experience less hunger feelings. The gastric band is made of silicone with an inflatable balloon that is fitted on the inside. In this way, the diameter of the gastric band can be adjusted after the operation: the narrower the band, the faster you feel full and the slower the food passes the gastric band. Topping up (that is: making it more tight) is done by injecting fluid (saline) through the injection port that is placed under the skin during the operation and is connected to the gastric band via a tube. Moisture can also be removed so that the gastric band can be adapted to your body and wishes.

The gastric band ensures that less food can be taken in and it is therefore called a restrictive procedure. With the gastric band you als experience a saturated feeling quicker and it will lasts longer. In this way, the gastric band helps to lose weight. Ultimately, you are the one who has to make sure to lose weight by changing your  lifestyle. That means eating less and exercising more. The result of a gastric band is only worth while if you intent to really make changes in your diet and lifestyle.
