Breast lift

What is a breast lift?

A breast lift is one of the most common breast operations in the Netherlands and our specialised doctors* will gladly help you.

The breasts play an important role when it comes to the appearance of a woman. Women can feel insecure about their breasts, and our experience tells us that a breast lift can have a big, positive effect on a woman’s self-confidence. Some reasons why women can struggle with the shape of the breasts are:

  • Increase or decrease in weight – the breasts may start to hang after a pregnancy

  • Breasts that are too heavy that can cause back, shoulder or neck problems

  • Psychological reasons – you might feel insecure if you feel that your breasts are too small or too big.

*The doctor will determine if the treatment is necessary for medical reasons. * This treatment falls within the tax-exempt medical care as stated in article. 11-1-g Tax Law, 1968.

How is a breast lift done?

When performing a breast lift, excess skin is removed from the breast. This means that the breast will end up being a little smaller. This is also why a small implant is used to make smaller breasts look bigger.

Once the skin has been removed, the nipples and the breast tissue are moved up to their new position. There will be a round-shaped scar around each nipple. However, sometimes, a sagging breast can only be corrected with a breast augmentation.

What are the advantages of a breast lift?

  • You can have the operation done within two weeks

  • Our doctors have many years of experience

  • The operation will take about 1,5 to two hours

  • The recovery period is two to three weeks

  • You will be given a general anesthetic.

When am I a suitable candidate for a breast lift?

Before the breast lift can be performed, you will need to meet with one of our consultants. They will listen to your wishes and expectations and give you advice as to which doctor is best suited for you. An appointment will then be made with the doctor who will perform the breast lift. This doctor will examine your breasts and determine if it is medically responsible to perform the surgery. Should everything be okay, then your surgery can be scheduled. The law in the Netherlands stipulates that there must be at least a 7-day waiting period between the consultation with the doctor and your operation date.

What can I expect after a breast lift?

When performing a breast lift, it is not always possible to achieve perfect symmetry. The symmetry depends on the natural position and shape of your breasts. It could be that after the operation, the final shape of your breasts and the sensation in your nipples is different from what you had expected.  Due to the stress on the breast tissue, there is always the possibility that the final modal may look different to how it looked just after the correction. The final results won’t be visible until at least two months afterwards. The breasts will be more supple, and they will relax a little. The sensation in the nipples will return a little  after three to six months.

How do I care for the wound? Aftercare Instructions for a breast augmentation or breast lift
You may have a shower the day after the operation; however, you will need to make sure that the wound stays dry. The bandages are waterproof and can be dabbed dry. However, do not remove the bandages during the first two weeks – they are attached to the sutures. The sutures will dissolve on their own and may also not be removed.

What you should keep in mind:

  • For the first two weeks: do not raise your arms, do not do any sports and avoid direct sunlight.
  • For the first six weeks: Get plenty of rest and avoid physically strenuous activities – such as cleaning the house: vacuuming, cooking or lifting heavy objects. Do not go swimming or visit the sauna in the first six weeks.

You should protect the scar from the sun for the first year so that it will not change colour. Should you experience any redness, swelling, or develop a fever or have an open wound or should there be other matters of concern, do not hesitate to contact the Diana Gabriels Practice.

Post-operative bra’s

After the operation, you should wear a bra that offers plenty of support but with no underwire. We have good quality bra’s available in several models. We have bra’s with supported side cups, a hook closure at the front or back, with adjustable straps or fixed wider straps.

Breast lift using doughnut technique

How is a breast lift done using the doughnut technique?

When performing a breast lift, excess skin is removed from the breast, making the breast a little smaller. This is also why a small implant is used on smaller breasts to make them look bigger.

However, if the breasts sag to such a degree that a breast augmentation will not be enough to correct the problem, then a different technique will be used where the skin around the areola is removed. By doing this, the nipple and the areola can be placed higher up on the breast. This causes round-shaped scars around the areola. Hence the name ‘doughnut technique’.
Sometimes a sagging breast can be corrected with just a breast augmentation.

What can I expect after having a breast lift done using the doughnut technique?

When you have had a breast lift done, the aftercare is very important. You should take good care of yourself after the surgery. This will allow the wound to heal better, and you will also get better results.

The treated area will be swollen after the breast lift, and there may also be some bruising. These symptoms should go away after three days. Most people can go back to work the week after, but you should listen to your own body well. You may need longer to recover.

Make sure you avoid doing any heavy strenuous activities for the first two to three weeks after your surgery, to avoid straining your breasts. The scars can be very visible and fierce in colour for the first couple of months after the operation. However, they will eventually take on the colour of your skin. We always try to work as accurately as possible to make sure that the scars will be as small and discrete as possible

Breast lift with prosthesis

What does a breast lift with prosthesis entail?
Are you considering a breast lift with prosthesis? Then you have come to the right place. A breast lift is one of the most performed breast surgery in the Netherlands and our specialized doctors are happy to help. This procedure is always performed under full anesthesia. With a breast lift, excess skin is removed from the breast. This means that the chest becomes slightly smaller. Many people therefore choose to perform a breast lift with prosthesis, so that the breasts do not become smaller. The prosthesis provides an enlargement of the breast. When the skin is removed, the nipples and breast tissue are placed higher. A circular scar will form around both nipples. The wounds are sutured with soluble suture material. Our BIG registered doctors always work as accurately as possible, to keep the scar as small as possible.

The treated area will be swollen after the breast lift, and you may have some bruising. These symptoms should go away after three days. To ensure that the wound will heal better, and quite often, faster, you must keep the wound dry for the first four weeks. Most people go back to work the week after having had a breast lift done. But listen to your own body well. You may need longer to recover.

Make sure that you don’t do any heavy strenuous activities for the first two to three weeks after the surgery and avoid straining the breasts. The scars can be very visible and fierce in colour for the first few months after the operation. However, after a few months, the scars will start to take on the colour of your skin. We always try to work as accurately as possible to make sure that the scars will be as small and discrete as possible.

The check-up

You will be contacted by a member of the support staff from Praktijk Gabriels the day after your operation. We will inquire how you are doing and schedule your first check-up appointment, which is generally one week after your operation. Naturally, you are welcome to stop by before then or contact us with any questions you may have. Your second check-up will be at two weeks. This is when the bandages will be removed, and your wounds will be examined to see how well they are healing. After four weeks, at your third check-up, the sutures will be removed.
