Ear Correction

What is an ear correction?

Ears that stick out – also known as ‘flap ears’ are quite common. They can have a negative effect on a person’s confidence. Ears that stick out are the result of a congenital disability in the cartilage skeleton of the ear. If you are not happy with your ears, then this can be resolved with an ear correction. You will be left with a scar behind the ear, but you will not be able to see it.

*The doctor will determine if the treatment is necessary for medical reasons. * This treatment falls within the tax-exempt medical care as stated in article. 11-1-g Tax Law, 1968.

What are the advantages of an ear correction?

  • No more flap ears

  • You will already be able to see the results after a week

  • Recovery is seven to 14 days

  • Recovery is seven to 14 days

When am I a suitable candidate for an ear correction?

It draws attention when the ears stick out too far from the head. People can be bullied because of this. A correction is then often worthwhile.

How is an ear correction done?

The plastic surgeon will make an incision at the back of the ear. This will leave a scar, but you will not be able to see it. The cartilage is corrected, and a section of skin is removed from the back of the ear. The ear is then pulled back and fixed into its new position. The ear is stitched into place using soluble sutures. After the operation, your head will be wrapped in a turban bandage and you are free to go home. The procedure takes an hour to perform.

An ear correction can be performed using a local sedative or under general anaesthetic. Another option is to use a local sedative in combination with sleeping gas.

Consultation

During your first consultation, we will discuss what this procedure entails. We will also discuss what bothers you the most about your ears and what you would like to do about this. We will discuss the various methods and operating techniques used and decide which best meets your needs. We will also discuss with you what you can expect in terms of end results, what the possible risks are, and the necessary aftercare. You will always receive honest advice and be informed clearly about the treatment and what needs to be done in the period afterwards.
During your first consultation, the plastic surgeon will also check to see if you are a suitable candidate for an ear correction. The surgeon will ask you questions regarding your health, medical history and any possible medication you may be using. Should you use blood thinners, then you should stop using them at least one week before the treatment.

What can I expect after having had an ear correction done?

Your ears will be kept in a turban for the first week after your operation. After which, it will be removed. You will still need to be careful with your ears for another week when doing sports or other activities. You will also need to wear a bandage at night to protect your ears during this period
You will have a check-up in our clinic, one week after your operation. The bandages and the sutures will be removed, and we will check to see if the wound is healing correctly.
You should avoid direct sunlight for the first few months after your surgery. We also recommend that you do not use the sunbed. Should you choose to use a sunbed, then you will need to carefully cover the scars with a high sun protection factor crème or cover them with a cloth. This will prevent the scars from staying red for an unnecessarily long time.
